Facilitate insights & health outcomes over information and metrics

At the center of clinical decision making is an understanding of the relationships between clinical data points, patient goals, and patient conditions. Build toward the understanding of those relationships to deliver clinical insights, rather than a slew of information that the clinician must make sense of. This includes helping clinicians to practice based on shared, meaningful goals with patients, rather than default to population goals, and designing for the desired outcome rather than designing first for avoidance of the undesired outcome.

Integrate disparate data presented in easily consumable ways, and when possible detect trends and anomalies to draw clinicians’ focus to what needs their attention most. Use data in service of clinical gestalt by allowing the clinician to be able to adjust granularity of information to understand the insights surfaced.

Provide useful context

Providing useful context is a design principle that focuses on giving users the information they need to understand and use a product or interface effectively. Useful context can include information about the product or service, its features, how to use it, and how it fits into the user’s life or workflow.

Practical actions:

Provide clear instructions

Giving clear and concise instructions on how to use the product or service, including any necessary steps or actions that the user needs to take.

Use visual aids

Using visual aids such as icons, graphics, and videos to help explain complex concepts or features in an easy-to-understand way.

Provide help and support

Offering users access to help and support resources such as online FAQs, chat support, or email support can help users find the answers they need quickly.

Personalize the experience

Personalizing the experience to the user’s needs and preferences can help them understand how the product fits into their life or workflow.

Provide feedback

Providing clear and timely feedback to users can help them understand the impact of their actions and provide guidance on how to use the product more effectively.

By providing useful context, designers can help users understand the product or service better and use it more effectively, resulting in a better user experience overall.
